Weekend Sucia Sail

Sucia SunsetThe Pacific sunsets are amazing.  To see it in all of its glory, you have to go ashore, and do a bit of climbing.  The hardest part is getting back to the boat over uneven terrain in the dark.

Sunset

  Out over the ocean, and it’s waves it lay,
A magnificent orange sphere, as it drops to the sea,
With spears descending from within the fire,
The magnificent beauty of the sunset each day,

An immanent display, for the world to share,
As it seeps below horizons, to end the day,
Only to share light, so that others may see,
The beauty of the sunset for all who care,

Up above the clouds, that shadow the light,
The rain, the snow, and the elements that blind,
That magnificent glow, that Brightens our world,
Another sunset awaits, just to share its light,

Baker SunriseYou have to get up early to see the sunrise, but it is well worth the effort. The pictures do not do it justice. Sunrise is a great time to read, reflect and pray.

Sea Fever

I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea's face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
All I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the seagulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trip's over.

After our southeasterly tack off the southern point of Point Roberts, we have a long sail close to the prevailing southwesterly wind. During this time, we take turns at the helm, and since the wind is only blowing at about 10 knots, we are sailing along at about 5 knots. During this 2 1/2 hour leg of the trip, Jen goes below to cook, Julie reads a bit, Madeline takes a nap in the gently rocking aft cabin.  Whenever not at the helm, Dan scurries around topsides tidying up the ropes and tweaking the sails for max speed.

Chris soaks up the RaysThere may not be anything to compare with sailing to bring a family close together. As we worked together to get our sailboat out of the harbor for the first time and tried to learn the ropes, there was an early frustration.  What followed during the course of the day was both unexpected and and exciting.  After finally getting the sails up, learning how a moment of distraction can cause the boat to fall off the wind and several other landlubber lessons, we settled into a pleasant sail.
