Memorial Day, 2007

Today we drove down to Ft. Snelling National Cemetery where my grandparents on my mother's side are buried and then down to a cemetery in Rochester where Ruth's grandparents are buried. My Grandfather came to the USA from Sweden when he was 17.  He ended up in France fighting for the USA in WW-I and had many stories of near misses and God's grace in seeing him through.  He was in France on armicist day and recalled a thick fog that cleared right at the moment the war ended.  My Grandmother came from a farm in North Dakota from a German family.  She moved down to St. Paul where she met and married my Grandfather.Ruth's Grandfather was originally from Mexico City.  Her Grandmother was from the "valley" in South Texas.  Her uncle was a county judge in La Jolla, TX (if I have my story straight.)  They met and married and ended up in Northern Minnesota of all places.  Ruth was born in Bemidji and raised by her grand parents.

My grandparents are buried in Section 14, Site 1017.  The endless rows of white grave markers are a really awe inspiring and humbling site.

The first thought that came to my mind was the incredible number of people that have put their lives on the line to protect our country and more often, other  countries and people groups.

The second thought that came to both my wife and I was how many people were out on this weekend to remember and honor their parents, grand parents, or other relatives or friends.  Events like memorial day remind me that there is a lot more right with this world than you sometimes think, and there are a lot of good people out there doing the right sorts of things just about every day.

Ruth's grandparents are buried together in Rochester, MN.  After leaving Ft. Snelling, we headed south.  It was a pretty long drive and the girls were starting to get a bit cranky, but it just seemed like the right thing to do.  Ruth has a lot of relatives in Rochester, but we needed to get back tonight to feed the dogs and stuff ... so Ruth called her mom to check in, but we only stopped at the cemetery.

Ruth's grandfather passed away when she was about 10 years old so I never met him.  Ruth's grandmother was a wonderful woman of strong, strong faith and seemingly endless prayer.  She passed away when Hannah was about a year and a half old.  Grandma Resendiz would dance with Hannah by holding her hands and letting Hannah stand on top of her feet.
